Blacksmithing Experience Day

Our Blacksmithing Courses, are designed to give you an introduction in to the ancient craft of blacksmithing, You will get to spend the day at the forge learning the basic techniques that will equip you with the basic skills to carry on forging.

The day will be spent at the anvil working with hot steel, sparks and fire. Over the day we will cover the basics of ; Forging, Forming, Bending and Joining which makes up the fundamental skills that have been used by blacksmiths for thousands of years.


Knife Making Class

Spend the day learning the tips and tricks of professional knife and blade making at Phoenix Forge.

We start out making a basic letter opener to get you warmed up and used to working with the forge, after a cuppa we get started on forging a true working knife. we go from selecting the right type of tool steel in to forging a rough blade shape out, then the shape is refined by grind the bevels. From there we demonstrate how to heat treat, and then depending on the style you will get to shape a suitable handle to fit.

By the end of the day everyone should have both a letter opener and forged knife to take away with them.

Axe Making Class

Your chance to forge & haft your very own hand axe! There are few things more satisfying than thrusting a lump of steel in to the flames and letting the sparks fly under your hammer as you craft your very own hatchet.

Learn how to work smith and striker to forge hot steel in small groups to forge a hand axe each.

This is an excellent course for groups and does require team work to move the metal where you want it to go.

The day is split in to three parts. Part one is forging out the axe, Part two is heat treating the axe to turn it in to a working tool, and part three is shaping and hafting (handeling) the axe. By the end of the day you have a fully working hand axe to take away with you.

Re-enactment Forging Class

The re-enactment class is designed for people who wish to explore the historical side of smithing. learn to forge using traditional charcoal and make a variety of items targeted to re-enactment.

The day will be spent making; Eating knives, Arrow heads, Spear head or blunt axe suitable for live combat. If you have something in mind we can tailor the day to suit

Always wanted to make your own scuplture? or got a project in mind and want to make it your self with a little help from the profesionals.

The Project day is the perfect course, with no set schedule we will spend some time discussing your project and figure out how to turn your drawings / concepts in to real items. Then you will be let loose to forge, weld, fabricate and craft your concept with experienced craftsmen on hand to help you along the way.

Tool Making Course

The Tool Making Course is designed for people who have a little previouse expeince with forging. The course will cover the tools used in the forge and most importatly how to make them

The two days will be spent forging your own; Tongs, Hand tools like chisels, punches, drifts and hardie tools as well as a look at the biggger toys used in modern production.
